How to make file-level anti-virus work on Exchange 2010 servers

They key to getting file level anti-virus software to effectively with Exchange 2010 is to eliminate scanning on the primary database, etc files for Exchange. Presumably you will be using some type of Exchange-integrated anti-[everything], and that it is unnecessary and counter-productive to try to scan these large and frequently changing files.

In this case, the AV software was Sunbelt's Vipre Enterprise, which as of this post was not really approved for use on Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010, however it works fine if setup properly. The only things you have to do are to have the AV software ignore the primary program and operational folders for Exchange and its components. Make sure to ignore these folders and all subfolders:

  • programfiles/exchange
  • windows/system32/inetsrv
